AI Overviews now sit above the results for a large share of searches. Here is how to get their text and sources as data, what is and is not available for AI Mode, and how to track whether your pages are cited.

**Quick answer — Is there a Google AI Overview API?**

Google publishes no API that returns AI Overviews as they appear in Search, as far as we found on 22 October 2026. SERP APIs fill the gap: **SerpCrypto** returns the AI Overview text and its cited sources in the `ai_overview` object whenever Google shows one, for one credit per search from $0.30/1K searches. SerpCrypto has no AI Mode engine. No KYC; pay in crypto.

## AI Overviews and AI Mode: the key facts

| Attribute | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Share of searches with an AI Overview | 43%, up from 15% a year earlier (Similarweb data, TechCrunch, 27 July 2026; geography not stated) |
| AI Mode visits | 279 million in May 2026, against 126 million in June 2025 (same source) |
| Official Google API | None found for AI Overviews or AI Mode |
| SerpCrypto field | `ai_overview`: `text` and `references` (index, title, link, source) |
| SerpCrypto AI Mode | Not offered |
| Cost | 1 credit = 1 successful search request, which returns one page of results on any supported engine. A request that fails is not charged |

## Why does AI Overview data matter in 2026?

Because a growing share of searches show one. Similarweb data reported by TechCrunch on 27 July 2026 put AI Overviews on 43% of searches, up from 15% a year earlier. The same data counted 279 million AI Mode visits in May 2026, against 126 million in June 2025.

When an overview appears, it sits above the organic results and cites a handful of pages. A site can rank on page one and still be missing from that list, or be cited while ranking lower. Positions alone no longer describe visibility.

## What does the ai_overview object contain?

It holds the overview text and the list of pages the overview cites. On **SerpCrypto**, the object sits next to `organic_results` in the same response, so one search gives you both views of the page.

| Field | Content |
|---|---|
| `text` | The overview as plain text |
| `references[].index` | Order of the reference in the overview |
| `references[].title` | Title of the cited page |
| `references[].link` | URL of the cited page |
| `references[].source` | Site name shown by Google |

The key is absent when Google shows no overview for that query, place, language and device. Your code should treat a missing key as "no overview", not as an error.

## Do all SERP APIs capture AI Overviews equally well?

No, and published tests show wide gaps. In a vendor benchmark of 25 identical queries, updated on 30 May 2026, Scrape.do reported AI Overview detection rates from 0% to 68% across the providers it tested, with SerpApi at 68%. Overviews can load after the rest of the page, and some depend on location and device.

That test was run by a provider about itself and its rivals, so read it as a direction, not a ranking. SerpCrypto has not yet published its own measured rate; when it does, the method, sample and date will be on this page.

## Is there an AI Mode API?

Not from Google, and not from SerpCrypto. AI Mode is a separate conversational search experience; we found no public Google API for it on 22 October 2026. Some SERP API providers sell AI Mode endpoints; SerpCrypto does not, and our engines are Google Search, Google News, Google Images, Google Maps (local results), Google Shopping and Bing.

If AI Mode matters to your reporting, track it with a provider that offers it, and use SerpCrypto for the classic results page and its AI Overview.

## How do I track whether my pages are cited in AI Overviews?

Run your keyword list through the API, read `ai_overview.references`, and record whether your domain is among them, next to your organic position. Do it on a fixed schedule, from the same location and device, so that changes reflect Google and not your settings. The script below writes one CSV row per keyword.

*Python: AI Overview citations and organic position per keyword*

```python
import csv
import os
from urllib.parse import urlparse
import requests
API = "https://serpcrypto.com/api/v1/search"
HEADERS = {"Authorization": "Bearer " + os.environ["SERPCRYPTO_API_KEY"]}
def host(url):
    return urlparse(url or "").netloc.lower().removeprefix("www.")
def check(keyword, domain, gl="us", hl="en"):
    params = {"engine": "google", "q": keyword, "gl": gl, "hl": hl}
    resp = requests.get(API, headers=HEADERS, params=params, timeout=60)
    resp.raise_for_status()
    data = resp.json()
    overview = data.get("ai_overview")
    cited = []
    if overview:
        cited = [host(r.get("link")) for r in overview.get("references", [])]
    position = next((r["position"] for r in data.get("organic_results", []) if host(r.get("link")) == domain), None)
    return {
        "keyword": keyword,
        "has_overview": bool(overview),
        "we_are_cited": domain in cited,
        "cited_domains": " ".join(cited),
        "organic_position": position,
    }
keywords = ["how to descale a kettle", "best time to water tomatoes"]
with open("ai_overview_tracking.csv", "w", newline="", encoding="utf-8") as fh:
    writer = csv.DictWriter(fh, fieldnames=["keyword", "has_overview", "we_are_cited", "cited_domains", "organic_position"])
    writer.writeheader()
    for kw in keywords:
        writer.writerow(check(kw, "example.com"))
```

## How much does AI Overview tracking cost?

The overview comes with the normal results page, so it costs no extra credit. One keyword checked once is one search.

A weekly check of 500 keywords is about 2,000 searches a month; 10,000 searches ($7.50) covers five months of it. A daily check of 2,000 keywords is 60,000 searches a month, which fits in 100,000 searches ($56.25). Prices as of October 2026; credits never expire. You pay in BTC, USDT, USDC, ETH, SOL, LTC, with no ID upload.

## AI Overview API: common questions

### Does every Google search have an AI Overview?

No. Similarweb data reported in July 2026 put them on 43% of searches. Whether one appears depends on the query, the country, the language and the device, so the `ai_overview` key is often absent.

### Does the AI Overview cost extra on SerpCrypto?

No. It is part of the Google results page, so it comes in the same response as the organic results, for the same single credit.

### Can I get AI Mode answers from SerpCrypto?

No. SerpCrypto does not offer an AI Mode engine. It returns the classic Google results page, including the AI Overview when Google shows one, plus Google News, Images, Maps, Shopping and Bing.

### Can I see AI Overviews for another country or city?

Yes. Set `gl`, `hl` and `location` as for any search. Overviews differ by market, so compare like with like: same country, language and device each time.

### Is the AI Overview text stored by SerpCrypto?

We return it to you and do not sell it. We log, for each request, the time, account, engine, query parameters, status and credits used, and keep these logs for 30 days to show your usage and settle billing disputes, then delete them. We do not sell or share your queries. We keep your account number, orders, top-up records and credit totals while your account is open, and afterwards only as long as accounting rules require. We disclose records to authorities only when the law requires it.
